Compte RendusOn the 8th of October, as the IMF and World Bank meetings got underway, an estimated 300 protesters took to the streets, carrying "chains of debt" to the IMF and World Bank, marching with them to the White House-and finally draping the paper chains over the White House Fence, and getting away with it! The march went right past the front and back doors of the World Bank and wound around the IMF before proceeding to the White House. A giant "Loan Shark" puppet was constantly circling, like a real shark smelling food. Jubilee and other activist groups participated in the demonstration.

300 March Against IMF and World Bank Debt

Noisy Midnight March Wakes Up Mayflower, Concordia Hotels

After dodging cops all the way from 16th and Harvard Streets, the Friday night march arrived at the Mayflower Hotel, packed with IMF delegates, at about 11:30 PM. At around midnight the march reached the IMF-owned Concordia Hotel. At the Mayflower security quickly shut the doors, remembering their experience last Spring when they were stormed by another anti-IMF night march.
The arrival here was like stirring up a hornet's nest, with MOTORCYCLE cops appearing to suddenly come up the Metro escalators, motorbikes and all!
All night cops blustered and threatened, one person reported tackled, but I did not witness any arrests. I did see barricades thrown in the streets to delay the cops both near the start and at the Mayflower.
The IMF-owned Concordia got TWO wakeup call, as the march passed by them twice. Both times cops were stationed outside the door (unlike the Mayflower), again like in Spring 2010 during the "soccer riot" outside this IMF-owned excuse for a hotel. article, photos, video

Goldman Sachs Lobby Disrupted by Protesters

On the 8th of October, animal rights activists stormed the lobby of Goldman-Sachs, protesting their continued status as a shareholder of Fortress, the lifeline of Huntingdon Life Sciences. As this is the weekend of the IMF and World Bank meetings, protesters against Huntingdon Life Sciences have chosen to focus on financial institutions that invest in Fortress or otherwise are connected to HLS for this week. The Friday timing caught security by surprise at Goldman-Sachs, and protesters were able to storm into the lobby blowing air horns and wielding bullhorns.
Nomura, another major stockholder in Fortress, had their doors held open for bullhorns before security was able to close and lock them.
Fortress Investment made a $100 million dollar loan to HLS, without which HLS would not be closed. Since HLS kills 500 animals a day on average, that's a lot of dead beagle puppies because of Fortress—and their investors, Goldman-Sachs and Nomura among them. video, photos, article

Second night march takes on the IMF, ends in arrests, police violence, broken windows

On October 9, a second night march against the IMF and World Bank meetings was met with police violence and and an illegal mass detention where people were detained and released individually. This skirts close to violating the terms of court settlements and legislation against meaningless arrests stemming from IMF protests in 2000 and 2002.
In addition to the mass detention, there was a report from a legal observer that one person was thrown to the ground by four cops and ended up in the hospital with a bleeding head wound. As is usual when the pigs inflict personal injury, they charged him with "assaulting a police officer"- For what? Hitting the pavement they were standing on with his or her head?
The march still managed to pay a visit to the Mayflower Hotel, where IMF delegates were staying, keeping them awake marching around the back and side of the building-an unexpected line of attack. video, photos, article // Report on police violence

After the Saturday night march against the International Monetary Fund and World Bank was dispersed by the DC metropolitan police, affinity groups used the situation to attack targets (photos) in the Friendship Heights shopping district. Windows along the main strip including Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, a Microsoft office, and an ATM at a bank were hit in the middle of the night. Anticapitalist and anarchist graffiti was seen along the Galleria walls and behind banks.
